What do the Scientific Societies offer?
- Be a Leader
- Society members mentor students, residents, newly certified clinicians, and experienced professionals interested in developing knowledge in their specialty area. Students and residents are welcome to join, benefit from, and contribute to the experience of the society members.
- Get Published
- Join a society and contribute to prominent professional publications including the Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics (JPO), the Academy
- Contribute to Education Programming
- Societies are key contributors of education programs for the Academy Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium. They also create learning modules and webinars for the Paul E. Leimkuehler Online Learning Center (OLC).
- Network Online
- Academy Scientific Society memberships are groups where interaction is encouraged. The sites feature tools to connect and communicate with like-minded peers and top professionals who share your interests. The sites offer discussion forums, journal and book club opportunities, blogs, video and image hosting, and news feeds to stay on top of the Society's activities.
- Get Involved
- Get involved in the future of O&P by becoming a society leader. Chairing a society can help you meet the public service requirement to earn or renew Fellow of the Academy status.
Society members are encouraged to participate in conversations among colleagues on general topics or in their area(s) of interest by visiting the Academy Scientific Societies groups. Membership is required. To join one or more societies, use the buttons below. If you are already a member, go to the Community menu item and My Groups to join the conversation.
The Scientific Societies provide a forum within the Academy for individuals with special interests to share information and knowledge among members, encourage research, present and publish the results, and create learning modules for the O&P Knowledge Central course catalog. To become involved, visit the individual web page of each society and contact the officers directly or contact the Academy. For details about the Scientific Societies, visit the links below.
Formation of a Society
Societies have been formed in 10 practice areas:
Behavioral Science, Bone-Anchored Prosthetics, CAD/CAM, Craniofacial, Gait, Fabrication Sciences, Lower-Limb Orthotics, Lower-Limb Prosthetics, Spinal Orthotics, and Upper-Limb Prosthetics
In general, Societies are easy to form and are encouraged by the Academy. Any group of twenty or more Academy members may petition to establish a Society. Each petition should include the printed names, addresses, and signatures of the Academy members.
Such groups may be instituted to facilitate communication among research specialists and to increase the knowledge within those areas of interest.
To assist in establishing a Society, the Academy will publish a brief announcement in Academy Today concerning the proposed Society. Relevant information should be sent to the Academy.
